ATEC Research Programs

ATEC will organize and conduct research in the following areas.

Fundamental Research Thrust

Post Silicon Devices (PSD): Develop breakthrough devices for next generation high temperature power electronics for vehicle applications.

Advanced Storage (AS): Improve battery energy density and power density needed in various vehicles.

Enabling Technology Thrust

Advanced Power Electronics (APE): Cheaper and more efficient power electronics interface required for interfacing fuel cell, energy storage devices with the grid;

Advanced Battery Module (ABM): Develop kWh scale storage devices capable of deployment in PHEV and PEV. This subthrust takes deliverables from the Advanced Storage subthrust;

Vehicle to Grid Control Technology (V2G): include
a) smart charge and discharge algorithm;
b) ability to incorporate market incentives;
c) Human Machine Interface for monitoring;

Advanced Motor (AM): develop advanced motor technology for PHEV and PEV.

Technology Validation and Demonstration Thrust

Grid Systems (GS): To demonstrate the center developed V2G technologies on a number of scale-down or to scale testbeds.

Vehicle Systems (VS): Validate the operation of developed vehicle components. This subthrust takes deliverables from the Advanced Power Electronics Advanced Battery Module and Advanced Motor subthrusts;
